In support of its mission to advance economic development and promote gender equity, REACH Women’s Network created the Community Survey of Women in the Workplace as a platform for working women in Forsyth County to anonymously share their thoughts, preferences, and experiences related to job satisfaction and personal and professional barriers impacting their career growth.
The goal of this research is to provide employers with actionable information to support women in the workplace. REACH Women’s Network hopes that the data from this survey — and the meaningful actions that it prompts — will help position Winston-Salem as a city where working women thrive.

The Community Survey of Women in the Workplace was developed by volunteers from REACH Women’s Network with assistance from strategic marketing firm Girl on the Roof (www.girlontheroof.com)and nonprofit research organization Forsyth Futures.(https://www.forsythfutures.org) Where possible, survey questions were benchmarked against national studies, including but not limited to research by McKinsey & Company (https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/diversity-and-inclusion/women-in-the-workplace)and Deloitte.(https://www2.deloitte.com/global/en/pages/about-deloitte/articles/women-at-work-global-outlook.html) Survey questions were designed to allow for tracking of improvement over time on key metrics associated with job and career satisfaction, burnout, employment benefits, and more.
The Community Survey of Women in the Workplace ran from September to December, 2022 and was open to all working women living and/or working in Winston-Salem / Forsyth County. The survey took an average of 13 minutes to complete and received 687 eligible responses.
The majority of women surveyed were full-time employees at one job, working 35 to 50 hours per week. 95% of respondents self-identified as professional women. 71% described their race/ethnicity as White; 21% identified as Black/African American; 5% identified as Latinx/Latina/Hispanic; the remaining respondents fell into other categories.
88% of respondents had completed at least a bachelor’s degree. Annual wage income followed a bell curve, with the highest representation (27%) reporting an annual salary of $50,000–$74,900.
Data analysis, which is still ongoing, has been conducted by nonprofit research firm Forsyth Futures (https://www.forsythfutures.org)and strategic marketing firm Girl on the Roof.(www.girlontheroof.com) The first public release of data from the Community Survey of Women in the Workplace was presented at the 2023 REACH Women's Conference on April 19. Additional data analysis will be released topically through the REACH Women's Network website. REACH also plans to conduct special events throughout the coming year, to explore topics in more depth.
The purpose of this research is to provide employers with actionable information that can be used to support women in the workplace. If funding is available, the survey will be repeated periodically to track progress, with the end goal of positioning Winston-Salem/Forsyth County as a community where working women thrive.
REACH Women’s Network is a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to advancing economic development and promoting gender equality by elevating the collective voice and influence of professional women. REACH secured funding for the Community Survey of Professional Women from the Richard J. Reynolds, III and Marie M. Reynolds Foundation, Twin City Development Foundation, and Woody Clinard. Strategic marketing firm Girl on the Roof (www.girlontheroof.com)donated services to this project.
REACH Women's Network is still analyzing survey results with the help of nonprofit research firm Forsyth Futures (www.forsythfutures.org)and strategic marketing firm Girl on the Roof.(www.girlontheroof.com) The survey included 33 questions with a total of 116 possible data points per respondent, so there is ample data to explore. REACH will be releasing data through this website and expects to host a series of events based on topical themes. The primary objective of this research is to provide employers with actionable information that will help women thrive in the workplace.
